Sisters (2023) - Short Narrative (Writer/Director/Casting Director)

My thesis film is about Parker, an adoptee, tries not to break down under the threat of losing her sister, Nina, to a crazy family. Drinks spill, grandmas choke, and sisters fight as Parker tries to stop Nina from getting married.

Directors Statement:As an adoptee, I've come to realize how adoption has affected me as I've grown older. Despite being a part of my family, I often feel like an outsider because I look different from them - they're white and I'm Asian. This feeling was amplified when my sister got engaged and people didn't recognize me as a member of the family at her wedding. This experience made me reflect on why I take pride in my last name – it’s the one thing no one can question about me belonging in my family. Writing about my experiences as an adoptee has been a cathartic process for me. I've noticed that when people talk about adoption, they often focus on the perspective of those who are adopting, rather than the adoptee. That’s why, before this film, I made a documentary from the adoptees' point of view, showcasing the positive and negative effects of adoption that people may not know about. Through my films, I want to raise awareness about the real experiences of adoptees and dispel misconceptions that people may have.

Liminal Space (2022) - Short Narrative (Writer/Director/Casting Director)

Katie who is a Chinese transracial international adoptee, hasn’t been exposed to her birth culture. Going to her Chinese friend Jerry’s house, for the first time, Katie gets a glimpse at what his life was like growing up in a house with other people that look like him and see the difference in culture. This prompts Katie to contemplate her own feelings about being Chinese and if she’s ready to try and connect with her birth culture.

Directors Statement: As an international and transracial adoptee this story was very personal for me to create. I’m interested in showing the adoptees perspective in films since the adoption narrative has been skewed in films. The adoptee is usually someone that needed “saving” and the parents is a saint for taking in this helpless child. As an adoptee there are many things that I don’t know about myself and am still coming to terms with. Writing this has allowed me to reflect on what being an adoptee is like. For instance, I don’t know a lot of the information that non-adoptees do; like my birthday, where I was born/am from, who my parents are and if I look like them, if I have any siblings, etc… When I am around Asian people, I don’t feel like I am Asian enough, but when I’m around everyone else I feel as if I am too Asian. I wanted to show Katie’s experience of seeing how someone who grew up with their own parents has that history of themselves and felt like they belonged. As well as the dynamic between an adoptee and their parents especially in an international and transracial adoption. There are things that parents will never know that their child is going through.

The (un)lucky ones (2021) - Documentary (Director/Editor)

A documentary revealing the dark side of adoption, an international adoptee recounts her experiences of fitting in with her adoptive family and society in the United States.

Directors statement: There's a lot of things that are uncertain in my life. Such as when my birthday is, who my parents are, where I am from, etc... I was adopted when I was about a year old, and according to my paperwork, I was found at the gate of an engineering building in Wuchuan.

Directors Statement: After watching "One Child Nation" I saw that there were many babies trafficked from Wuchuan and it made me think more about my adoption and look into groups, which made me realize there were other adopted people who have gone through many of the same things as I have and that my mixed emotions about being adopted are valid. Adoption is always seen as a good thing and there is the attitude that adoptees should be grateful. It made me want to bring awareness to some of the issues that adoptees go through and validate adoptees' feelings.
